Enrollment in science and engineering PhD programs expected to increase

More than ever before, students pursuing college education are choosing to major in science and engineering, which could cause an increase in the number of PhD candidates.

A new study from the UK’s University and College Admissions Service (UCAS) found the number of college students who enrolled in engineering degree programs was up 17.3 percent from last year and students declaring majors in physical science rose by 9.3 percent.

Dave Delpy, Chief Executive of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, said an “increase in undergraduate interest in science and engineering” is expected to lead to “greater numbers of PhD students…over the years to come.”

Findings also indicated science was the most popular subject among secondary school students who were surveyed, which suggests students enrolling in science-related degree programs will continue to increase.

Recent research from the National Center for Education Statistics also found students enrolled in scientific degree programs were more likely to obtain a bachelors degree and pursue advanced degrees.

Prospective PhD candidates may consider obtaining an online degree in a science-related field to begin work on their career goals and accelerate their course of study.

I have often though about going back to school to get my PhD, but it just seemed like such a daunting task to take on when I already have a job that keeps me really busy. Online school makes it more realistic, how many hours does it take?

I work for a corporation that really promotes education. They are a financial institution and will pay for my degree as long as it is in line with my job. Is there any engineering courses I can take that could be used in finance?

Hey Val. Many scholarships are geared towards students who are planning to or are enrolled in an accredited four year university. So long as the school you are attending/will attend is accredited you should be able to use a scholarship for online or on-campus degrees. Education Connection’s Grants and Scholarships page has a scholarship directory available to everyone.

Hi Ivan. In order to find out if you’ll lose credits or not you’ll have to get with an advisor at the school you’re considering transferring to. They’ll be able to tell you what credits may or may not transfer. Good luck!

Hi Edward. I’d recommend speaking with an advisor about the career you’re looking to get into to see if your degree choice would qualify for tuition reimbursement at your company.
