Experienced chefs take online classes in hospitality management

Many chefs with extensive experience are enrolling in evening, Saturday and online degree programs to learn hospitality management skills, the New York Times reports.

Even highly regarded culinary experts are realizing the value of a diverse skill set that can come with a bachelors or masters degree in hospitality, including John-Conrad Ste. Marthe, who was Bill Cosby’s private chef for 13 years. For the past year, Ste. Marthe has been taking weeknight, Saturday and online courses to obtain a bachelors degree in hospitality management.

Ste. Marthe is one of many chefs who have developed a need for a well-rounded education that extends beyond the boundaries of the kitchen. “Every time I applied for a [managerial] job, the responses were, ‘you have great background great experience, but you don’t have management experience,’” he told the media outlet.

Many restaurants – particularly high-end institutions – prefer managers that have graduated from associates or bachelors programs in hospitality management that include an internship requirement, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Ste. Marthe added he chose to enroll in the partially online program because his “finances are limited, and with [his] work schedule [it] seemed like the best choice.”

Chefs who are wishing to transition into hospitality management or open their own restaurants may take advantage of the offerings of online universities to further their education while fulfilling their career commitments.

It has always been my dream to become a cook, and after getting laid off from my current job, I think I am going to pursue it. What kind of financial aid is available for an online hospitality degree?

I have already graduated from Culinary School and have been working in a french restuarant in NY. I am thinking about opening my own restuarant but was wondering if it would be advisable to take some college courses online or even get my degree first?

I love cooking. I have been thinking about going to culinary school, but I already work in an office. Can I take culinary classes online, and are there well paying jobs available in this field?

I know chefs can earn a good income under certain circumstances. But, how hard is it to find a job where I can really make a living?

I am so excited to read this. I am already a chef, but want to go to work in a large catering facility and they need me to take some additional courses. Now I know I can take them online in my own time.

Financial Aid consists of grants, scholarships, federal and private student loans as well as tax credits and benefits for military personnel. Most schools have financial aid personnel that can help you figure out what forms of financial aid you may eligible for.

I actually find it quite interesting, yet smart that chefs are doing this. It opens up so many choices for the chefs in their future.

Its odd how you’d never think that a chef would need to take classes beyond how to cook well but when you stop to think about it, it seems pretty obvious. I think its great that they can take these classes online though, the more we push for increased access to education through the use of technology the better off we’ll be I say!

Some cooks can make great meals but can’t run a restaurant. This is a great asset for those who want to get more on the management side of things.
