Online Degree Earns Firefighter a Pay Raise

Completion of an online bachelors degree program has boosted the earnings of a firefighter in Taunton, Massachusetts. Gary Trudeau, a fire department lieutenant, has earned a 5 percent pay raise for earning a bachelors degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University by taking college courses online, the Taunton Daily Gazette reports.

While Taunton awards the pay increase to all fire department employees who earn college degrees, Maria Gomes, the city’s director of human resources argued that Truedeau was not entitled to the raise because online education did not exist in 1983, when the policy was instituted.

This argument was rejected by Tauton’s Fires and Wires Committee, which voted to increase Trudeau’s pay. David Pottier, council president, said he had no qualms about accepting the online degree, as the school has received favorable rankings from several academic rating authorities.

Increasingly more employers are beginning to realize the value of degree programs online, as a recent study from the Society for Human Resource Management found that 79 percent of human resource professionals view online degrees more favorably than they did five years ago.

As a Columbia Southern University employee I would like to congratulate Mr. Trudeau on his accomplishment and his good fortune with this case. Online education has come a long way, and the CSU Fire Science Programs http://www.columbiasouthern.edu/fs/ are some of the finest in the world, with some of the largest and most famous fire departments as partners, are programs continue to serve many fire service professionals.

I did my degree online. It was so nice because I could fit it around my work schedule. But you have to be disciplined to be able to do it! And be sure to pick the right degree that is growing.
