Many of the skills recent graduates of degree in business programs have learned are among some of the most important things employers are looking for in prospective employees, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
Employers taking part in NACE’s Job Outlook 2010 survey ranked communication skills the most important skill for potential employees. Rounding out the top five were analytical skills, the ability to work in a team, technical skills and a strong work ethic.
“These are the skills that employers believe are important to on-the-job success,” said Marilyn Mackes, NACE executive director.
Most business degrees earned at brick-and-mortar institutions and online colleges require students to complete classes that will build these all-important job skills.
For instance, business communication and business presentation courses – both of which are often necessary in an online degree in business program – may help individuals learn how to effectively communicate both orally and on paper.
Other required business classes, such as accounting, economics, finance and marketing, can arm graduates with a core knowledge of business theory or help them hone their analytical and technical skills.
In addition, group projects often required by many business degree programs teach individuals about teamwork and require them to develop a strong work ethic.
“Not surprisingly, our research shows that employers are looking for well-rounded candidates,” said Mackes. “In a tight job market, the candidate who can offer that bit more has the advantage.”

I graduated from college with my bachelors degree more than 20 years ago. Now I am trying to get a new job. Would it be to my advantage to take some online courses to refresh my degree?

This is such a great idea. So many people that are hired for a job, who have graduated with a degree, lack the basic skills needed in business.

I have recently retired. Now I want to learn technology. I just want to say that this online schooling is the best thing. At 70 years, I have not desire to go to on campus school, but this I can get excited about.

Lets be honest, the economy still is in bad shape. More people now than ever are trying to hide out from the economy in schools now but I’ve always feared that they will spend a ton of money and graduate back out in to the economy with a bunch of theory but not a lot of real world skills. Its great to see that some schools are making it convenient for students and a priority for the school to teach real world skills they can start using on day one.

Hi Helen. There are many jobs that can be done from home. What field are you interested in getting into?
March 28, 2011
Hi Lauren. The classes offered in degree programs vary from school to school. You’ll want to speak with an advisor or check out your (potential) college/university’s degree catalog to see what courses you’ll need to take.
