As college tuition costs are increasing each year, many learners are worried about paying for their education. Students hoping to earn college grants should remember that sometimes they need to look no further than the institutions in their home state.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is currently offering college grants to 10 students for the 2010-2011 school year, according to the Kentucky Post. The recipients will receive $2500 each in scholarship funds and will study at the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). These degrees
“We’re excited to launch this scholarship program that will provide a pipeline of highly qualified technologists and afford selected students a unique opportunity to advance their careers,” Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock told the news source.
This is a fantastic opportunity for students pursuing a STEM degree who wish to launch a career in civil engineering technology but were worried about accruing school loans. Those who receive the grants will be preparing to work with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet after they graduate. For every year a student receives an award, they agree to work one year at the cabinet.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average starting salary of a civil engineer is more than $48,000 annually. This is a strong incentive for college degree holders who are looking for financial security as soon as they join the workforce. Both engineering and science degrees can provide an individual with a stable career and lucrative salary.
Those students that would prefer the convenience of online college can pursue a technology degree online at a variety of online schools. Although they may not be able to take advantage of this grant program, they could be eligible for the Pell Grant and the National SMART grant.
