Science PhD Programs Grow in Popularity Among Women

Science and higher education are no longer considered only men’s fields. Increasingly, women are showing interest in pursuing PhD programs in the sciences and they are being encouraged to do so at younger ages.  The growing numbers of available science PhD programs online is adding to the popularity of women earning this advanced degree.

Gone are the days where women were expected to excel in the humanities only. Now, even primary school kids are learning about the importance of studying science – and perhaps considering a PhD degree program in the future.

In fact, one New Jersey institution recently held a “Women in Science Day” for younger ladies to consider science and higher education as a potential career path, The Daily Record reported.

At the event, young students were encouraged to consider choosing a science degree, and they met with other professors and successful women who answered questions and provided inspiration. The women who participated in discussions had a wide range of careers from a veterinarian to a dietitian and a hair dye developer from L’Oreal, the news provider revealed.

It’s never too early or too late to consider pursuing a PhD program. Many people find the research, continued learning and opportunity to teach that accompanies a PhD program to form an extremely rewarding and challenging career.

If you think that you do not have time to pursue a PhD, you might consider an online degree program.  Many women are finding out that there are high-quality doctorate programs offered completely online.  The online PhD option allows you to go back to school without having to sacrifice your current job or time with your family.

I am considering goimg to school online to become a vet. I have an associates degree right now and am working for a manufacturing company. It seem like going for a Phd will take a very long time. Is it possible to to for your Phd and still continue working?

Hi Amy: Well, you do have a leg up since you have an associates. It will take you another 2 years to get your bachelors, 2 years for your masters, and another 2 for the PhD. But once you are done you will be an expert!

I currently work in the operations department of a credit card company. I have my associates degree and a good job. I have been wanting to apply for a job as a supervisor but need to begin going for my bachelors degree. What is the best place to start looking for financial aid for this?

A PhD has always felt so unattainable to me. But now with online schooling, it seems less frightening. I have enrolled in my first course and am taking in one step at time.

I intend to get my PhD. I have a long way to go but I am moving at a really good pace. I think online college is phenomenal. I would not even think about going for a PhD if I had to go to a campus everyday – it would be impossible.

Hi Jonathan. If you’re looking to switch to an online degree program you’ll need to speak with someone at the school you plan on transferring to in order to make sure your credits transfer correctly. You don’t want to lose credit for work you’ve already completed. Best of luck

Hi Phoebe. One of the great things about getting a degree online is it’s flexible hours; rather than having to leave work to head to campus you can work from your home or anywhere that you are comfortable and have an online connection to complete coursework, discussions, readings and more.
