Online Education Makes College a Reality for Parents

Some individuals may have decided that having a family was more important than attending school – but now want to earn a degree. College for parents need not seem like such an unattainable goal, particularly thanks to many flexible programs, schools online and funding options.

One mother has made the decision to return to school without taking time from her family. Instead of going to on-campus courses, she is working towards a lucrative law career under the supervision of a lawyer at the firm where she works, the Seattle Times reports.

She will soon participate in the state’s bar exam in the hopes of becoming a lawyer, even though she did not attend a traditional law school. In addition, the program requires candidates to have a bachelors degree before enrolling. Those interested in trying to obtain higher education in a similar manner may consider online degree programs, which can help them begin to prepare for the bar exam sooner.

Individuals working towards their bachelors degree or associates degree may find that an online degree program works best for them, especially if they spend a lot of time at home looking after their kids. Such online degree programs offer round-the-clock study, which can be an attractive alternative to on-campus classes. Parents without cars do not have to worry about transport, and will save money on childcare. They can also study at their own pace and accommodate their kids’ activities and schedules.

Isn’t technology great? I’m so happy to be living in 2010 because this would never have been possible 20 years ago!

I’m a parent of two now and I think this might be my best option, thanks for the info! I wonder though would I need an expensive computer to take these classes?

I am a single mother of 2 and would love to go back to school and get a degree so I can make a better living for my family. How difficult would it be to get financing and learn to use a computer?

What a great idea this is. I got divorced 20 years ago and was left with 2 children to raise. If I could have gone to school online, it would have made my life so much easier. Now I will go to school online and get my degree.

Online school has really worked for me. I have a small child and started school on campus. I always had to bring my daughter to a babysitter and it cost quite a bit. Now I have switched to online classes and what a change. Now I work at home while my baby takes a nap or at night and save all of that money I spent on babysitter before.

This is such a good thing for single moms. It’s such a depressing place to be, alone, raising children, not enough money and no one to watch children so you can go to school, no time to go. Now with the advent of online courses, you can be home with kids, get financial aid to pay for it, and do you studying in spare time. It can be the savior of single moms.

I recently got divorced and my husband cannot even pay child support. When I look at this financial aid, it only covers part of the tuition, it there some way to get a complete package?

I have been doing a study in Europe for the last two years, and now that I am back because my wife passed away, I have two small children to care for. Is there any extra scholarships for single parents in this position?

I’m a mother of 3 small children (3 yr, 12 mon, 5wks) and I want to go back to school but a campus is really not an option. Online seems wonderful, however a couple of the colleges I talked to have set class time that you must attend and thats just not possible. Any advice to colleges that do not have set class times..I mean after all if I could do a set class time everyday i would just go to a campus!

Hey Bethany. Online college is just as difficult as a typical university/college course. However, you do have to have the right amount of discipline to complete your courses. You can try taking a free college course online to see if it is something you could do.

Between work and my family life I don’t have much time for going back to school. What are the typical working hours like for online school?

Hey Paul. That is a great question, especially for someone with a busy schedule. The great part of online courses is the flexibility, particularly because the “working hours” of online school can vary. Some professors may request you log in between certain hours while others may not be so specific and only ask that you finish your work. It depends on the course and professor more often than not.

Hello Mandy, there are many ways you can try to find the “complete” package. Look for other scholarships and grants to cover any further expenses.
