Business Degrees Allow Students to Give Back

Individuals working towards business degrees sometimes aspire to open their own companies, rise up to top-level management positions or eventually lead a team in a prestigious organization. However, others choose to use their MBA skills to give back and teach less fortunate individuals how they can build a life for themselves.

Programs such as MBAs Without Borders offer up such opportunities for business degree holders, BusinessWeek recently reported. As part of this initiative, students who have achieved business degrees work for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in developing countries. Through their efforts, these individuals can help local residents build businesses and learn the ins and outs of independently running a company.

The students are known as “business advisors” while working abroad and are set up with an individual or company in order to offer their services, the news provider reports.
Volunteers do not receive a salary, but can obtain financing for living expenses and flights to and from the U.S., thanks to the efforts of nonprofit organizations.

Those who want to work towards their business degrees in order to help others may consider online college or other on-campus programs to obtain these qualifications.

I’ve been told having your MBA is great but if you mix that with a foreign language, you are set. Any truth to that?

I am very interested in getting my degree in business. I have started my own business making jewelry and want to learn how to be very professional in running it. Would I need to get a bachelors degree, or would an associates degree teach me enough?

Nice article! It’s good hear that MBA Students are actually trying to give back to the community be it as an NGO or as a volunteer educator for the local residents. Kudos for the effort and hopefully more help such as this in the future.

I’ve spent some time working and volunteering in Latin America with NGOs that have a global presence. Some of these organizations are hurting badly for people who have a strong business education from the US or Europe and can speak the local language in countries across the world. Take it from me, learning Spanish for Latin America, French for sub-Saharan Africa, or Mandarin will make you extremely attractive when paired with a MBA for many NGOs.

Hi Jannea. A bachelor’s degree online can take about the same amount of time as an on-campus degree. It really depends on the number of courses you are able to take during the semester and how quickly or slowly you’d like to finish the program.
