In thinking about degree plans and careers, I’m reminded of a couple movies that came out in the 1990s: Son in Law and PCU. Both of these are similar in that they both support a series of hijinks and shenanigans on plots based around fitting into an unfamiliar surrounding. Additionally, they also share the timeless college-movie trope of the zany, experienced slacker who’s changed his major a million times, and as a consequence, has been on the campus longer than most of the adjunct professors.
A lot of students who enter college right out of high school fall into the trap of picking a major out of the pressure to matriculate as soon as possible. Sure, they’re out in four or five years, but they’re stuck with a degree in a field they’re not necessarily thrilled about, and this in turn often steers them into a career they don’t enjoy. The time crunch on college students, coupled with dorm life, work and the just-out-of-the-house strain of irresponsibility often leads to unfortunate career-path decisions.
By contrast, the flexible schedule and time commitment afforded by online universities allows students to research and explore fields of study at a pace that keeps them from getting shackled to something they won’t end up liking.
