Things to Consider When Posting and Submitting your Resume

You’ve started sending out your resume to prospective employer(s) in the hopes of receiving call(s) for an interview(s).  There are a few things to pay attention to that will increase your chance(s) of being invited for an interview.

 Resume
  • Make sure your contact information and work experience is updated as it may have been a while since you last posted or submitted your resume.
  • If you are including an email address in your resume be sure it is a professional email address.  An email address that is offensive or includes profanity will surely eliminate you as a potential candidate.
  • Try not to have any gaps in employment and be certain that all dates of employment are correct.
  • If you are seeking employment at the entry-level and have no previous work experience in the field but have a degree related to the entry-level position, you will want to list your education before the work experience.
  • Provide a strong and convincing Objective or Summary of your skills, talents, knowledge and positive attributes in two to three sentences.  Simply stating in your Objective or Summary that you are seeking a position in a specific field is not convincing or enticing to a prospective employer.
  • You will want to include specific words in your resume that match the job description especially online job postings.
 Voice Mails
  • Remove any music from your voice mails whether from your home or cell phone number(s).  Company recruiters do not have time to listen to music of any kind and will probably not wait for the beep to leave you a message.
  • Use a professional and brief voice mail message on your home and/or cell phone number(s).
  • Speak slowly and clear when recording your voice mail messages and always include your full name.
  • Do not use religious voice mail messages as it might be considered offensive and you don’t want to offend anyone who is calling you for a job interview.
 Message Follow-up
  • If you receive a message from a company regarding a position you submitted your resume to, follow-up with a return call immediately so as not to miss out on a job interview invitation.
  • If you are invited to an interview, be sure to confirm the address as well as the person’s name and contact information with whom you will be meeting with.
  • Always confirm the date and time of the interview.
  • Thank the individual who invited you for the interview and express that you are looking for to the appointment.
  • If you cannot make the interview for any reason or need to change the interview appointment be sure to speak with the person who set up the interview with you.  If you have changed your mind about interviewing with the company, let them know in advance that you are canceling the appointment.  Also, inquire as to whether you need to follow-up with the person you will be meeting with if it isn’t the same person who set up the appointment with you.
There is a lot of competition out there and those who put their professional foot forward will reap the rewards.
