I thought I'd add a little onto the previous question of, "do you have to work in the same field as your degree?"
With specialty degrees such as accounting, finance, and engineering you are in a limited field, meaning that few have the opportunities to get into those fields. Your chances to stay in your field of choice are strong. That being said, general degrees are more open to move, not only amongst industries, but also fields. For example, the marketing field includes analysis, promotions, advertising, research, etc. A marketing degree will cover all those fields, but experience will also play into those.
For 14 years I have worked in the hospitality industry (which there is a degree for), with a degree in marketing. I have worked with teachers, historians, accountants, and nurses all working outside their fields.
